History

The beginning of Colbert Veterinary Rescue, Dr. Gloria Andrews...

In 1998, I moved to Madison County, Georgia from the Athens area.  There was no animal control and the dogs that were running loose and wild were numerous.  I took many a skeleton dog from the side of the road into my job in Athens and found homes for them. In 2002,  I decided to start a practice named Colbert Animal Hospital in Madison County. Every time I drove to work along route 72, there were at least 2 or 3 dogs dead on the side of the road.   We tried not to take in every injured animal brought to us, but a friend had seen a black dog in the ditch for two days in a row. She found out that the owner had shot the dog because he thought it was chasing his cows and he did not want it.  My friend brought the dog to us and we did the surgery she needed and Athens Banner Herald came out and did a story about her to help us raise funds to take care of her.  She turned out to be an awesome dog and eventually found her forever home and was very loved.  As case after case of human stupidity came to us, we did what we could to help.

In 2004, Canine Angels located in Elbert County came under scrutiny of the Dept of Ag because they had too many dogs.  People dropped many  dogs off at Canine Angels and after a year they had almost 250 dogs.  The situation was out of control with only two people to care for the dogs!  The animal hospital workers contacted shelters in the New England area to see if they would take the dogs and  found a trailer we could use. Fortunately I already had a truck that could pull the trailer.  We took 45 dogs from Canine Angels to rescues in New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont!  That was our very first transport!

In 2006, we obtained our non-profit 501c3 status and have been continuing transporting dogs to places where they a better chance to be adopted. Over the years, Colbert Veterinary Rescue Services has evolved and we have been very successful in transporting and rehoming the dogs in Connecticut.

For us, It is all getting dogs and cats into loving homes and we have seen God work in our lives to bring us to this point.  We are constantly blessed by responses from adopters over the years, letting us know how much they have enjoyed their companions and the difference they have made in their lives.

Our lives have also been changed by the many friends we have made as well as the manydogs, cats and adopters.

To God be the glory!
